❀ !!! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! ❀

What a crazy trying year 2020 had been. I want to write to you all to let you know that your patience means the world to me. Like pretty much everywhere, it has not been easy here, but sometimes, knowing that there are generous and patient patrons out there, and knowing there are those who are still curious about Chinese culture and Chinese history, sometimes it literally feels like the difference between giving up or grit my teeth and keep paving on.

Your care keeps both the lights on in my house and in my heart, and please believe me that I consider myself lucky to have your esteem. But enough of these silly sentiments. It is my pleasure to tell you that this year- like always, you can expect more of my usual write ups real soon! After all, my only resolution this year is to write more (and now you know.)

So here is to you and to 2021.
May good things return. May the world be kind.

Chu Prince-楚国公子子晰

In the works 《越人歌》, there is a song about a beautiful Yue girl expressing her love for the Chu prince(子晰).(☆-v-)

Though the Chu prince didn't understands what she was talking about。。。 (; ᯅ ; )ノ

I admired the girl who dared to express her love to the right person, even if they didn't speak the same language.

About the make up.
I am not sure about this subject- at least in regards to male make up. Though it is possible they might. I will have to look deeper into this.

Although let us not discount the fact this could be a princess or a noblewoman as well- in Tang it was not uncommon that women of high birth would crossdress as men (during the Tang it was somewhat accepted) it was also not uncommon that women would participate in hunts. Because of the more liberal nature of the Tang dynasty women had significantly more autonomy than many of the later Chinese dynasties.

Great work!

The round collar seems reminiscent of Manchu fashions hundreds of years hence. Did this style of Turkic origin make it to Japan? since the Japanese borrowed so much from the Tang.

I believe so, Nara Period fashion for the Japanese court is taken directly from Tang styles.
Have a look at Prince Shotoku of Japan who brought much of Tang culture and customs to Japan, look at his round collar robe.

Various type of Central Asian embroidery also made their way to Japan as well, including silk by Persian artists living in Sui and Tang China (or imitations based on their artworks)

A lot of Tang material culture and fashion is Persian, or rather Sogdian influenced. Which I like very much. It seems Persianate culture is the only culture respected by the Chinese. The Persian peoples were deemed just as civilized as the Han Chinese, with an ancient culture and civilization almost as old as China, it's a pity the Sassanians fell and Persia converted to Islam.

I do find the distinct ancient Iranian cultures very interesting. Yeah it's very sad the Sassassnians fell, such a fascinating empire.

On the matter of their modern identity and their embrace of Shia Islam, that's not something I have an opinion on. It's kind of their business. I have Iranian friends on many political spectrums so I defer the matter to them.

What could you say about the culture of cherry blossoms or blossom trees in premodern china? Is it related to Japan's?

What's he wearing on the end of his sleeves/ cuff? I love the art work.

They look like decorated bracers I believe, a way to prevent sleeves from interfering with archery
