Mongol Heavy Cavalryman, Yuan Dynasty 元朝蒙古勇士
Music: Xiger Xiger
14th century Mongol warrior (Yuan dynasty) in heavy lamellar armor that was widely worn in the Song and Yuan dynasty. For protection, he carries a Central Asian Kalkan shield constructed by having thin plant rods spirally plaited around a wooden disc, then stitched securely with fabric threads. For combat, he carries a lance slung on his back. Usually, he would also be equipped with a bow and saber. His quiver is slung to his right. With the firm possession of the ancestral Mongol heartlands as well as the bounties of China, Kublai Khan made himself the Great Khan over the other Mongol rivals.
Covering over 11,000,000 km2 (or 4,200,000 sq mi,) territorially, the Yuan dynasty was one of the largest Chinese dynasties, second only to the Qing. To legitimize his rule Kublai claimed both the mantle of a Chinese Emperor as well as the Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. An diverse dynasty, Kublai and his descendants employed many talented Central Asians, Nepalese, Uighurs, and Northern Han in the administration of the immense empire.
Although the great Mongol Empire was slowly beginning to disintegrate due to the infighting among the various branches of the noble princes in Central Asia, by contrast, Kublai's Yuan dynasty proved to be more stable and pursued a vigorous renewed series of invasions for another few decades. In the end the Yuan dynasty proved to not only be one of the longer lasting of the Mongol successor kingdoms but also in official Chinese histories, still bore the Mandate of Heaven among the procession of dynasties.

How 'Mongol' was the Yuan anyways? they may have constituted the ruling class but there were probably few Mongols in China at the time, hence the need for foreign born administrators. It was only a matter of time for the native Han Chinese to rebel and expel the Mongols.
How different was Yuan civilian clothing from the native Han Chinese? or was there a difference?
On one hand there was nothing like the forced adoption of wearing long ques seen in the Manchu days. On the other, you are right, as a minority the Yuan's hold cannot last for too long. Conversely it was the Manchu's integration that made their empire more lasting (Manchu's over compensating staunch adoption of Confucian morals and incorporation of Tibetan Buddhism etc)
